What Maintenance Does a Steam Generator Require?

A steam generator, the heart of every steam shower steam showers  regular maintenance to ensure it operates efficiently and safely over the long term. While most generators are designed to be low-maintenance, neglecting routine upkeep can lead to mineral buildup, reduced performance, or even system failure.

One of the most important maintenance tasks is descaling the unit. Over time, especially in hard water areas, mineral deposits from calcium and magnesium can accumulate inside the boiler tank. Most modern steam generators include an auto-flush system, which automatically drains and flushes the tank after each session. However, even with auto-flush, descaling with a recommended cleaning solution should be done every 6 to 12 months.

Some manufacturers provide specific descaling kits, which include a flushing hose and chemical cleaner. You’ll need to power off the unit, allow it to cool, disconnect the water supply, and then run the descaling solution through the tank, followed by a thorough rinse. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid voiding the warranty.

You should also inspect the steam head periodically. It can accumulate residue from essential oils or minerals and may require cleaning with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh abrasives that can scratch or damage finishes.

The control panel and thermostat should be checked for responsiveness. If the unit fails to heat properly or doesn’t maintain consistent temperatures, it might indicate a faulty sensor or heating element—both of which can usually be replaced.

For long-term care, monitor the generator’s water filter (if equipped) and replace it as needed. Keeping the generator in a dry, accessible location like a cabinet or utility closet with ventilation will also help prevent moisture-related electrical issues.

In summary, steam generator maintenance involves regular descaling, inspection, and occasional part replacement. With proper care, a quality steam generator can provide reliable steam therapy for 10–15 years or more.
